FOR RELEASE:
IMMEDIATE, Thursday
April 22, 2004
STATEMENT FROM
GOVERNOR GEORGE E. PATAKI
"Yesterday, the New York State Banking Department suspended the license
of CashPoint, a money transmitter operating in more than 700 locations in
New York State, pending completion of an investigation.
"CashPoint, together with licensed check cashing services, provided a
means for many New Yorkers to pay their bills for housing, utilities,
municipal water and other basic services.
"I have instructed the Banking Department and the Public Service
Commission to work cooperatively with all of CashPoint's agents and
creditors, including banks, utility companies and City agencies to ensure
that consumers' interests are kept front and center. Thus far,
I am pleased with the progress they are making.
"New Yorkers who have used CashPoint to pay bills during the last week
are advised to take the following steps. Ensure that you have all of
the receipts documenting payments an if you feel that your account has not
been properly credited for past payments, call the utility or other
creditor. If you have further questions regarding your utility
bills, call the State Public Service Commission at 800-342-3377. Other
concerns can be directed to the State Banking Department at 877-BANKNYS."
